A trip to Reading Museum offers a fascinating encounter with Britain’s history through its full-length, Victorian-stitched replica of the Bayeux Tapestry. Measuring an impressive 70 metres, this painstakingly detailed embroidery—crafted in 1885 by 35 skilled needlewomen—captures the dramatic events leading up to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Joining a guided tour transforms the experience, as knowledgeable tour guides unpack the hidden propaganda, subtle storytelling, and Victorian modesty tweaks woven into the panels. Standing up close to inspect every intricate woollen stitch makes the Norman Conquest feel vivid and immediate, offering all the spectacle of the original masterpiece.
We leave at 3pm.
